The company mailed the cards in preparation for an auction at Strongsville Sports Collectors Convention that was being held next door to the Best Western Hotel on Royalton Road, where Paxton worked as a night-shift clerk. The package was dropped off by a FedEx employee on April 17. Strongsville police were contacted after hotel staff told Memory Lane employees informed them that the package could not be located. After an investigation, police determined that Paxton looked through multiple packages that had been delivered to the hotel, prosecutors said.He took the package of baseball cards to Bowling’s home near Roanoke Avenue and State Road in Cleveland, prosecutors said. Police linked the two men to the stolen cards using phone records, GPS evidence and witness testimony, prosecutors said. Authorities arrested Bowling on May 22. The following day, Paxton was arrested at a home in Cleveland’s Old Brooklyn neighborhood, where 52 of the stolen cards were recovered. Two cards worth a total of $89,540, a 1909 Ramly Walter Johnson card and a 1941 Ted Williams card, are still missing, authorities said. The stolen collection of cards included rare Cracker Jack cards, Mickey Mantle and Roberto Clemente.
