With Valentine’s Day around the corner, local businesses in Anchorage are getting creative with ways to celebrate on Saturday, including candle making, love on the ice, and even an anti-valentine celebration.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - With Valentine’s Day around the corner, local businesses in Anchorage are getting creative with ways to celebrate on Saturday, including candle making, love on the ice, and even an anti-valentine celebration.

Chester Minot, owner of Get Scent, has something different planned. He will be offering candle making classes. But these aren’t just for candle making; couples will listen to a live acapella group and have homemade Filipino food to snack on while their candles dry.“It’s not just a workshop; it’s more in the experience,” Minot said. “I love bringing my Filipino heritage to my business. So, I asked my parents and my aunties to make some food that day.“I want both of my world to kind of collide,” Minot said. “So, I brought in some a cappella, live a cappella singing here.”For couples that love the outdoors, the Sweetheart Skate might be for them. This event at Westchester Lagoon will feature Ice Skating for couples, music, hot chocolate, and a lighted photo opportunity, according to the “It’s one of my favorite events,” Ellen Devine with the Municipality of Anchorage Parks and Recreation, said. “It’s just a great opportunity to get out with somebody special in your life.”“One of my favorite things is we have these gorgeous sleds,” Devine said. “One looks like a swan ... and you can take your sweetheart around on the ice.”For the foodies, Alaska Berry and Board will put on workshop nights, where people can make their own charcuterie board. The first night is at Double Shovel Cider Company on Feb. 9, and the second event is on Feb. 13. at Odd Man Rush Brewing.
