A developer of a platform that teaches people computer coding and the maker of drones that can fly for weeks scored big at Geekdom's holiday pitch competition.

Two startup companies — the developer of a platform that teaches computer coding and a maker of drones that can fly for weeks — scored big at Geekdom ’s holiday pitch competition, walking away with a combined $50,000. The annual “ Shark Tank '-style event at the downtown co-working space pitted five early-stage firms against one another for funds to grow their businesses. Thursday’s event doled out the most cash in a single pitch event since Geekdom ’s Community Fund launched in 2018.

Google partners with Geekdom to give area startups access to cloud, AI resources Laura Ruiz-Roehrs and her company, Code Flight, a self-paced computer coding training platform, won the competition and took home $30,000. The San Antonio company launched in May and currently has 150 subscribers for its services. “I’ve been part of the Geekdom community for a while now, and I just felt supported through the whole journey,” she said.

‘Invest In’: San Antonio Startup Week kicks off with message about investing in diversity James Oleen and his company American Tenet, which is developing unmanned aerial vehicles that can fly for weeks without an engine, earned second place and took home $20,000. The firm is developing drones that use wind currents to fly for long periods “using a proprietary computer vision model to detect and track wind currents for extended soaring operations,” according to a company description.
