“All kinds of people use this data for improving programs for students and monitoring very important emerging trends,”
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Alaska’s Youth Risk Behavior Survey garnered nearly 1,200 responses from the state’s high school students in 2023, and the Alaska Department of Health released the mixed bag of results on Monday.
ADH opted not to administer the YRBS in 2021 because of COVID-related logistical challenges, leaving a chronological gap twice the normal size, at four years instead of two. More than 43% of students said they felt so sad or hopeless sometime in the prior year that they ceased some of their usual activities. That’s up 5% from 2019.
Texting or emailing while driving had been on a steady decline between 2013 and 2019, but that percentage skyrocketed back up in this most recent survey.
