Florida ranks last nationally for high school football coach pay, with coaches earning between $3,000 and $6,000 annually.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Florida lawmakers are preparing to vote on bills to raise pay for high school coaches across the state to address a growing shortage.would create new funding sources to increase coaches’ compensation, which currently varies widely across districts.

Florida ranks last nationally for high school football coach pay, with coaches earning between $3,000 and $6,000 annually. “We can not continue to lose great coaches to other states,” said Rep. Adam Anderson, R-Palm Harbor, who sponsored the proposal. Many Florida coaches, particularly in northern counties, are leaving for states like Georgia, where compensation is higher. The low pay has created retention problems for school districts trying to keep experienced coaches. “Long after the scoreboard gets turned off, the lessons they teach about discipline, teamwork, accountability and resilience stay with our students forever,” Anderson said. NFL Hall of Famer Chris Carter was among several coaches at the Capitol on Wednesday advocating for the pay increases. Carter credited his high school coach, Bill Conley, as instrumental in his 16-year NFL career. The pay issue particularly affects female coaches, according to Tessa Taylor, track coach at Frostproof Middle-Senior High School. “Because a lot of times you have females balancing home life, other jobs sometimes, and coaching. And there’s not always the support or compensation they need to do this,” Taylor said. Taylor said keeping more female coaches would encourage more girls to participate in sports, providing lifelong benefits. The bills would allow boosters to fundraise a portion of coaches’ salaries. Anderson has sponsored similar proposals in previous years but expressed optimism about this year’s chances. “It’s about respecting the role coaches play and the role our school districts’ ability to retain, reward, and recruit talent without mandates,” Anderson said. Governor Ron DeSantis has previously expressed support for increasing coach pay.
