A post-and-beam kit house from Acorn Deck House with floor-to-ceiling windows, a large deck, and screened porch creates a secluded, nature-immersed lifestyle in Reston, Virginia. The three-bedroom home backs to parks and trails yet feels private due to mature trees, offering transformative seasonal experiences from snowy winters to lush summers.
as an adult. Located on a wooded lot in Reston , this mid-century-modern post-and-beam house with glass walls surrounded by trees gives the illusion of living in a particularly chic one, with features that will impress both your inner child and your discerning adult taste.
According to its current owner, Molly Harrison, the home is a kit house from Acorn Deck House company, which she says has a cult-like following.
“People are just absolutely passionate about these things. ” Adjacent to the three-bedroom, three-bathroom, 2,500-square-foot home’s oversized wooden front door is a glass facade that allows you to see directly through the home’s split entry to the wooded backyard. Inside, there are warm wood ceilings, a soaring fireplace, and walls of floor-to-ceiling windows. Beyond the living room, glass doors lead to a large deck that overlooks the backyard.
More connection to the surrounding nature: there’s a screened-in porch off the breakfast nook; the upper-level bathrooms feature skylights; and the second living area—located downstairs—opens to the fenced-in backyard.
“When the weather’s nice, I’m sitting on the deck or in the screened-in porch,” Harrison says. “I take an hour every morning before work and drink coffee, read the newspaper, listen to NPR, whatever. And it has been transformative. ” Just off the Washington and Old Dominion Trail, the house is about a 20-minute bike ride to both downtown Reston and Vienna.
And because the home backs to Reston parks and trails, but is insulated with privacy by mature trees, Harrison says it makes her feel like she’s on vacation year round.
“It’s amazing in every season. It snows, it’s beautiful. The flowers start in springtime, it’s beautiful. The summertime is extra insulated with deep foliage—you feel like you’re enveloped in greenery.
The fall is also beautiful, and because it’s this post-and-beam house, you can hear the rain on the roof. It’s magical being in the house when it rains. I curl up with a newspaper or a book and just listen. ” The listing agent is Amy leads Washingtonian Weddings and writes Style Setters for Washingtonian.
