MONTGOMERY , Ala. - Phone calls made in the Wiregrass and other parts of southeast and central Alabama will be undergoing changes over the next two months. Beginning January 23, those that have a 334 area code in the state will be required to convert over to 10-digit dialing.
Implementation of 10-digit dialing for the 334 area code began last summer, with the permissive period that began on July 23 set to expire. Those who have only dialed their 7-digit phone number will now be required to add the three-digit 334 area code if they want to make any and all phone calls. In addition to the now-required 10-digit dialing, the Alabama Public Service Commission also announced that a new area code overlay – 483 – is set to be implemented for the 334 area code region beginning February 23. This overlay will not affect existing service for customers with a 334 area code, but phone numbers and additional telephone lines added to 334 customers may begin to be assigned numbers with the new 483 area code.The 334 area code region, which is affected by these changes, serves customers in southeast and central Alabama, including Dothan, Enterprise, Troy, Eufaula, Selma, Montgomery, Prattville, Pike Road, Tuskegee, Auburn, Opelika, Phenix City and Greenville and others in the general region.
