A 1956 International Harvester S-130 pickup truck, once the workhorse of a family farm, is being lovingly restored by a father and son, uncovering decades of memories along the way.

In the heart of Illinois farm country, a 70-year-old pickup truck waits patiently for a fresh coat of canary yellow paint. This 1956 International Harvester S-130 holds deep sentimental value for my family.

It was the first vehicle my dad learned to drive as a young boy, helping with farm chores by day and embarking on adventures with friends at night. Back then, the truck had no emotional weight; its worth was purely utilitarian. Pickups were built for work, and this one served the now-defunct Meyer family farm faithfully. Restoring this piece of history has become a labor of love for my dad and my brother Andy.

The S series from International had a brief production run in the 1950s, making replacement parts exceedingly rare. Andy, a master at finding the unfindable, spotted the truck for sale in rough condition and couldn't resist bringing it home. Since then, their quest for parts has turned into a treasure hunt that unearths my dad's childhood memories.

Stories of him behind the wheel as a child, taking neighbor boys on late-night hunting trips, the precarious ways he and his siblings accomplished farm chores, and the uncle whose prom date rode shotgun all come flooding back. Their odyssey through online auctions and Illinois backroads has taken on a life of its own, transforming from a single restoration project into a collection of five 1956 International Harvesters in various states of repair. Only one is beyond saving.

This truck is more than metal and rubber; it is a tangible link to an agrarian past and a family legacy. As my dad and Andy work to restore it, they are not just reviving a vehicle but preserving stories that might otherwise fade. The S-130 will soon have just one job: to look pretty, a stark contrast to its years of hard labor. It is an unexpected turnabout, but one that honors the past while celebrating the future.
