A surfer lost his life at San Francisco's Ocean Beach Thursday despite life saving measures by multiple surfers and members of the national park service ocean rescue team, who found him floating face down in the water.

"It's definitely scary it can happen to anyone at any time," said Thiago Velloso, a San Francisco surfer. "The individuals including that off duty lifeguard form the national park service were able to quickly maneuver through the Surfline and get to this individual and rolling this person over on to a surfboard while they were in that turbulence that you see behind me and getting that individual to the shoreline," said Jonathan Baxter, San Francisco Fire PIO.
Rescue team members performed at least six rounds of CPR as backup from the San Francisco Fire Department paramedics arrived to intensify efforts. SF Fire pointed to dangerous conditions at the beach.
"We have a short succession of waves. That means the waves are coming in quickly and they are crashing for a lack of term quickly, so they are extremely large so for pro surfers and semi surfers this is a good spot for them right at the surfline because for the novice individuals this is dangerous," said Baxter. It's still unclear what led to this tragedy at Ocean Beach.
The San Francisco Fire Department is urging the public to avoid Ocean Beach to swim or to surfer unless experienced.
