Experts warn about scams ahead of World Cup

Police and cyber experts warn that criminals are likely to sell counterfeit tickets or fake digital tickets using social media, copycat websites, or other unofficial platforms.

FIFA World CupThe first match at the Linc is on June 14, but as soccer fans gear up, scammers are, too. Alex Hamerstone of TrustedSec tells Action News, "There are always tons of scams around really any kind of event.

You know, it could be anything from transportation to fan sites to gambling.

"Police and cyber experts warn that criminals are likely to sell counterfeit tickets or fake digital tickets using social media, copycat websites, or other unofficial platforms. Gary Orenstein of Bitwarden warns, "Things can look very, very official with today's AI tools, and scammers are taking advantage of using them and also taking advantage of the people that they can dupe into thinking that that stuff is real.

"Orenstein says, "Start at www. FIFA.com and go from there.

"Hamerstone further warns, "Even if it's somebody attempting to sell tickets in good faith, if they send you a screenshot or transfer the tickets in an unapproved way. Those tickets are still not going to work for you.

" And once you get your tickets, do not share pictures of them on social media "because we've seen stories like that where somebody may share a picture of their ticket and somebody may steal it that way. And they go to the event, and their ticket's already been cashed in," says Hamerstone. Experts say to be cautious of party and fan packages that are too good to be true. They might include accommodations near the stadium, merchandise and more.

Police say criminals are creating bogus offers to steal your deposit and your personal information. Also, beware of fraudulent QR codes and links. They might promise a parking deal or a meet and greet opportunity, but make sure the offer is legit. Stick with reputable vendors you know and trust.
