He was transported to Comer Children's Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition, police said. The neighborhood woke up to a barrage of gunfire.
"That's disheartening as well," neighborhood resident Gwendolyn Davis said. "You know with the guns and everything and who has them, especially young people. " A neighbor said the gunfire not only disturbed the community's pre-dawn silence, but destroyed the sunroof of her SUV when investigators said someone opened fire on a teenaged boy. "Just heard shots going off constant shots," the neighbor, who did not want to be named, said.
"They just kept going. It was so many and then you just heard a car speed off... it's sad that it's right here. You see all the spots where the shells are at it's terrible.
" An active crime scene stretched to Otta Glasper's block. She discovered her vehicle was among several damaged during the attack. The violence has rocked this usually quiet block. Adul Aleem-Hajar who started a neighborhood group to help youth in the community now questions if Chicago will be able to keep kids safe this summer.
"People should be able to walk up and down the street go wherever they go and then go home," he said. "This is so disturbing. This is a teenager.
" Detectives haven't said how many shooters there were, if they recovered any weapons at the scene or what led up to the attack. So far, no arrests In this case
