Mayor Brandon Johnson leaves for Rome Wednesday night, and he's bringing some very Chicago gifts for Pope Leo XIV.
Mayor Brandon Johnson leaves for Rome Wednesday night, and he's bringing some very Chicago gifts for Pope Leo XIV. All things very Chicago, a Cubs hat, a Cubs jersey.
Although Pope Leo is a White Sox fan, the mayor roots for the Cubs and they could use all the prayers they can get right now. His private meeting with the Pope is set for Thursday afternoon. Mayor Johnson said he plans to thank Pope Leo for his advocacy, including pushing back against the U.S. war in Iran, and President Trump's immigration policies and actions carried out during Operation Midway Blitz.
"I'm going to talk about him the pulpit and the pen have to come together to deliver justice for our most vulnerable voting rights continue to be eroded by our government and as we continue to see economic disparity between those who have with and without we are going to need his pulpit and I am going to use my pen and that combination is the right combination I believe to bring justice for the most vulnerable. " Johnson said he and the pope share the same ideals when it comes to pushing back against the "godforsaken" policies of the Trump administration.
Gov. JB Pritzker has also had the pleasure of meeting with the pope, who's given rare opportunities to people from his hometown. The trip is funded and led by World Business Chicago, an economic development agency in the city. The mayor will leave Rome Saturday morning.
