He had been collecting American decorative arts -- and curating the gardens all around Winterthur -- since the 1920s, with the intention of opening it to the public. The property consists of a decorative arts museum, a 60-acre wild garden, and a pre-eminent research library. The vast collection consists of over 90,000 objects in all mediums, all materials, and things that would have been used every day.
On-view are items related to some of the most noted names in early American history, including Paul Revere, George Washington, and Thomas Jefferson. Current tours include the self-paced 'An American Legacy' that talks about Winterthur's 75th anniversary, as well as the celebration of America's 250th. A new exhibition titled 'At Home At Winterthur' opens May 23rd and looks at the people and community that made Winterthur what it is today.
Visitors can also take guided tours, includind 'Architecture of Independence' that includes elements from buildings in the original 13 colonies, from facades to the dramatic Montmorenci staircase.
