Monday, March 30, 2026 3:22PMIt's a story that's captivated audiences on stage, and on screen, for nearly seven decades, and this week, "The Sound of Music" returns to the Academy of Music. The iconic love story is a real story, and I had a chance to chat with a member of the von Trapp family who tells me their special connection to Philadelphia.

"I think our story is even more relevant again today," says Kristina von Trapp, the granddaughter of Captain Georg and Maria von Trapp. "It's a story of hope and love, where good triumphs over evil."It was then turned into and Oscar winning film in 1965, starring the legendary Julie Andrews as Maria. "Every time I watch it, I get sucked in," says Kristina. "It's amazing. Listen, I know how it's going to end, but every time I see it, it's always pretty special." The von Trapp family famously fled Austria and landed in Vermont, where they've run the von Trapp Family Lodge & Resort since 1942.But many don't know they settled in Philadelphia first. The musical returns to Philadelphia this week."It is a gift that keeps on giving every night," says Capaldi. "Just when I think I have her figured out, she continues to surprise me.""She was pretty firm and stern," says Kristina. "She had to be. She kept everybody together and singing around the world for 20 years, which was pretty incredible."Fun fact: there were actually TEN children. "There were the original seven children, like you see," says Kristina. "And then Maria and the Captain had three children together. Also, the oldest was a boy, not a girl."But one thing will always remain true: this story of love and courage and family is timeless. "It is so important for us now to preserve the original source material so that people can continue to fall in love with it," says Capaldi. For tickets and more information, visit
