The construction on the Tri-State Tollway is making progress to connect I-294 to I-290.
On Wednesday, ABC7 captured as big beams were installed for a ramp, to connect I-294 and I-290.ABC7 got an inside look at the hard work happening each day to commutes a little less stressful. I-294 is being reconstructed and widened from Balmoral Avenue to 95th Street to ease congestion and improve aging infrastructure and meet future transportation demands.
"Be patient. Every year you are going to see more and more get done and more lanes open up and improvements. This year is a big milestone. We anticipate opening this big fly under ramp by the end of the year," Jeff Allen with the Illinois Tollway said. Massive 196-foot-long beams were being assembled and installed as part of the work to complete a new fly-under ramp which will connect northbound I-294 to westbound I-290. Tollway officials said this improvement will eliminate a single-lane ramp, which is normally backed up with traffic. "We've come up with a solution now to have this ramp realigned and fly under 294 in a more direct alignment, which should help alleviate congestion, reduce travel times in that direction," Allen said.
