So far in 2023, ZPD has recovered 77 guns via what the department called, “pro-active efforts to stop the endemic threat of gun violence currently plaguing area communities.”
Zion police recently made three arrests of people carrying illegal or stolen firearms , continuing their efforts to reduce gun violence on city streets. On Nov. 5 at 1:47 a.m., police stopped a Chevrolet Tahoe after seeing its driver commit a traffic violation at the intersection of 21st Street and Lewis Avenue.
Police said they briefly pursued the vehicle for about five blocks. An officer saw the driver handling a semi-automatic pistol. The driver, Cory Montgomery, 31, of Zion, whom police said is a convicted felon, was charged with several felony counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, authorities said. That same day, at 3:07 p.m., police received reports of three teens, one of whom appeared to be armed, apparently prowling around residences near 24th Street and Galilee Avenue. Officers responded and detained one youth, while the other two fled. The first youth was released, but about 15 minutes later a resident reported someone hiding in his shed in the 2300 block of Hebron. Police arrived and arrested Gavin Butler-Johnson, 18, of Waukegan, after finding him in possession of a stolen handgun, authorities said. On Nov. 6, police said they arrested Teinge Howard, 39, of Zion. Police said their detection system alerted them to gunfire near the intersection of 28th Street and Galilee Avenue at 10:22 p.m. Officers arrived and saw Howard walking away from the area. He was stopped, and found to be in possession of a handgun that had been reported stolen in Georgia, police said. He was charged with aggravated unlawful use of weapons, authorities said. So far in 2023, ZPD has recovered 77 guns via what the department called, “proactive efforts to stop the endemic threat of gun violence currently plaguing area communities.” Truck stop robbery Police are searching for an armed man who robbed the Loves Travel/Truck Stop in Wadsworth. The holdup happened at 3:40 a.m. Nov. 6 at the business in the 43100 block of North Illinois Route 41. Authorities said a man entered the store, displayed a handgun and then stole cash from a register before fleeing in a black SUV. Photos of the robber can be seen on the Lake County sheriff’s office’s Facebook page. Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 377-4000 or go to lakecountycrimestoppers.com. Candidates spar The biggest story on the Lake County court beat in recent weeks was the Nov. 6 guilty plea entered by Robert Crimo Jr. He was set to stand trial on felony reckless conduct charges for vouching for his son, Robert Crimo III, on state firearm applications in 2019 that allowed Crimo III, who was then under 21, to buy firearms. One of those guns was the assault rifle the younger Crimo used to kill seven people at the July 4, 2022, Highland Park parade, authorities say. As the trial was set to start, prosecutors and Crimo’s attorney announced a negotiated plea. Crimo Jr. pleaded guilty to misdemeanor reckless conduct and was sentenced to 60 days in the county jail, along with probation and community service. Mary Cole, the attorney who is seeking the Republican nomination to challenge incumbent State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart, issued a news release criticizing Rinehart for negotiating the charges down to a misdemeanor, instead of trying the case on the felony counts. “If he ethically had probable cause to prove Mr. Crimo was guilty of felony reckless conduct like he charged, he should have been a prosecutor and taken the case to trial,” Cole said. “And, if he was concerned his probable cause wasn’t strong enough, he should have only charged Mr. Crimo with misdemeanors in the first place.” Rinehart said the prosecution was one of the few cases where a parent was held responsible for their child’s actions. “The victims of the shooting, the local law enforcement community, and Illinois State Police Director Brendan Kelly have all praised this prosecution and this result,” Rinehart said. “Meanwhile, my opponent, who was against bringing these charges in the first place and who refuses to support sensible gun safety laws, offered criticism without deliberation — minutes after the court hearing ended.”
