The beer mogul started by importing axis deer from South Asia and exotic fowl for his Hill Country ranch.

Second of two columns Last Sunday, we looked into the background of Lone Star Brewing Co. executive Harry Jersig , who exported his marketing panache from the boardroom to the brewery’s campus and to his Hill Country ranch. For his Auerhahn Ranch as well as the brewery, the beer mogul imported axis deer from South Asia as well as flocks of exotic fowl.

Lone Star Beer exec instilled his love of outdoor pursuits into the brewery’s branding Jersig wasn’t alone in seeing the potential in raising exotic species, according to an Exotic Wildlife Association presentation provided by the Kerrville-based organization’s executive director, Ken Yancey.

William Menger started brewery, founded downtown hotel and bought the city’s first steam fire engine Because these deer and other exotic species were considered livestock rather than wild game, they weren’t subject to hunting regulations. Jersig was far from the only well-known San Antonian to import nonnative species. In 1953, the Schreiner family’s YO Ranch added antelope as well as sika and fallow deer from a surplus at the San Antonio Zoo, according to the ranch website at yoschreiner.com.

Electric cowboy's demise was front-page news As for the Russian boar mentioned by reader Angela Overley in her letter, they had been living on Texas ranches since the late 1930s, when Leroy Denman Sr. “bought a pair of European wild hogs from the Brackenridge Park Zoo” for his Black Buck Ranch on Scenic Loop. As the exotic herd grew, “Denman released young hogs from time to time from the herd pen,” says the Express and News, Sept. 26, 1954.
