The Alabama Department of Corrections canceled its $1.06 billion contract with YesCare following payroll issues and selected Birmingham-based NaphCare to provide prison healthcare services.

At the time, ADOC and Gov. Kay Ivey’s office said it was working with YesCare to prevent something similar from happening again, however, during a Prison Oversight Committee meeting on April 22, ADOC revealed it terminated its contract with YesCare and signed an emergency contract with NaphCare.

A YesCare employee told WBRC they were told on Friday that they are “swapping” to NaphCare, and the transition would happen by May 3. NaphCare has not responded to questions, but its website has information for current YesCare employees.

“NaphCare is committed to ensuring this transition is not disruptive to you or your patients,” the site reads. The state awarded YesCare, a company based in Brentwood, Tennessee, a $1.06 billion contract in 2023 to provide comprehensive healthcare to all ADOC inmates through September 2027. At the time, state lawmakers raised concerns about the company’s financial history and ongoing litigation.
