The Yankees wasted no time showing Jake Bird the door after the reliever gave up a three-run home run to Mike Trout in Monday night’s loss to the Los Angeles Angels, optioning the righty to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Acquired from the Colorado Rockies at last year’s trade deadline, Bird has failed to be the bona fide option to bolster the Yankees’ rotation since his arrival. He posted a 27.00 ERA in three appearances before getting sent down to the minors last summer.

Four scoreless appearances to start the season suggested that he was getting back on track, but he gave up three runs to the Miami Marlins on April 5, then served up the game-tying home run to Trout in the sixth inning on Monday, an 11-10 defeat to the Angels.“It was a really tough night for him, but I thought he made a lot of really good pitches,” manager Aaron Boone said after the game. “A couple of mistakes they really put charges into to get back in the game. He had a hard time finishing off a couple of at-bats.”

Boone told the Talkin’ Yanks podcast on Tuesday that they will be calling up Yerry de los Santos to take Bird’s spot in the bullpen. The righty posted a 3.28in 35.2 innings with New York last season as a multi-inning relief option. He had a 1.93 ERA in 9.1 innings of work with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to start the 2026 campaign.

It is not the most headline-grabbing move. The Yankees have more dynamic arms brewing in the minors, whether that be Carlos Lagrange or Harrison Cohen, but de los Santos is a proven option that can contribute to a shorter bullpen now.
