Growing up, he said the last place he wanted to work was on his family’s farm.

GORDON , Ala. - Growing up, Kelvin Anderson said the last place he wanted to work was on his family’s farm. But while working as an industrial technician, the idea grew on him. “I got about 30 and 35 and lived in the city and missed a quiet life on the farm and the work, that’s when I decided, ‘Hey, it’s time for me to pick up and go back to the farm,’” Anderson said.

Since returning to Anderson Farms, Kelvin has cared for livestock and hundreds of acres of squash, watermelons, tomatoes, peas and more.“I realized over the years, about 80% of our vegetables don’t get sold,” he said. Unsold produce used to rot or go to Kelvin’s animals. Now, thanks to a state-funded grant, Anderson Farms is now home to a facility where surrounding farms can deliver their harvested produce to be washed, chopped and bagged. “That’s going to give us the opportunity to take the other 80%, and hold it for six months to a year, when we used to have to just discard it and throw it away,” Kelvin said. The process will also ready the fruits and vegetables for local markets and schools, which Kelvin believes will greatly improve students’ nutrition. “With this facility and the other local farmers around here, hopefully we can fill that gap for our kids,” he said. This year, having a productive season will be a tall order. Farm labor is hard to come by and drought conditions remain relentless.“My daughter, she’s helping out with the facility. And then I got another son that’s in business school. So he’ll be doing more of the business for it. And we’re just going to keep on working,” Kelvin said.“That’s what keeps me moving. Making sure that everybody has a decent meal at a reasonable price, knowing that I can provide food, not only for the people, but for my animals and for my state, for my county and for my country,” Kelvin said. Kelvin plans to eventually open Anderson Farms to the public to sell its fresh produce straight from the new facility.
