Former Duchess Sarah Ferguson came up with an unusual plan to use cloned DNA from a long-dead champion thoroughbred to breed polo ponies and make money from them. Despite serious discussions with her cousin for some time, the plan failed, reflecting credibility issues with her and the cloning technique

Penniless Sarah Ferguson came up with a bizarre plan to become an international polo pony breeder using cloned DNA from a champion thoroughbred – as a way out of her mounting financial crisis, according to her cousin.

The spendthrift former Duchess, 66, had long relied on cash handouts from Jeffrey Epstein, as well as trading on her royal status in wealthy social circles. But as she became increasingly tainted by association with the billionaire paedophile financier, she was left without means to support her notoriously extravagant lifestyle. Ferguson is understood to have discussed the controversial polo pony project with friends, family and supporters over several months from 2024-5.

Pivotal to her plan was Martin Barrantes, her cousin by marriage, who is an expert at cloning and has already produced polo ponies in this way - and had spoken to Fergie about using DNA from her mother's prize-winning horse, Luna. Luna, a very famous horse, was ridden by the legendary Gonzalo Pieres snr and won the Lady Townley polo tournament two years running in Argentina.

During Hector Barrantes' lifetime, Luna made headlines, but when she tragically passed away in 1998 after Susan Ferguson's surviving husband allegedly forced her into a car in the remote Argentine countryside to steal expensive jewels, her reputation deepened. Despite Luna's sad demise, Ferguson apparently didn't regard the pony's death as an insurmountable obstacle to her imagined project.

She named a start-up company she founded - La Luna Investments - after Luna and was interested in cloning the horse using a small sample of her skin kept in Buenos Aires. Her cousin, Martin Barrantes, an expert in cloning, could potentially help her with this project. It seems that Fergie was very serious about this unusual plan, but when she talked to other guests about it months later, she was greeted with disbelief and scepticism. This plan somehow failed, and Luna's cloning idea ultimately foundered
