Osaka, Japan, is implementing a comprehensive ban on public smoking ahead of the 2025 World Expo, aiming to enhance the city's image as an international tourist destination and create a healthier environment for residents and visitors.
One of Japan ’s biggest cities is preparing to welcome the World Expo in 2025 by taking a unique approach to beautification: banning cigarettes. Osaka will host Expo 2025, a six-month event from April to October, where representatives from 158 countries and regions will engage in talks, demonstrations, and exhibitions. This global gathering will see Osaka implement a comprehensive ban on public smoking, encompassing roads, parks, plazas, and all other public areas.
The ban, effective since January 27, applies to both cigarettes and vapes, with violators facing a fine of 1,000 yen (approximately $6). City officials emphasize that this initiative aims to elevate Osaka's image as an international tourist destination by enhancing safety, cleanliness, and overall appeal. The move also seeks to create a healthier and more comfortable living environment for both residents and visitors. While current national laws in Japan already restrict smoking in establishments like restaurants, offices, and public transportation, and some cities have implemented bans in public spaces, Osaka's measure represents a more comprehensive approach. It is also worth noting that Japan has seen a significant decline in tobacco use over the past two decades, with the number of smokers dropping from around 32% in 2000 to approximately 16% in 2022, according to the World Health Organization.Despite the declining trend, Osaka's local government has proactively mapped designated smoking areas within the city to ensure compliance with the new regulations. This initiative echoes similar anti-smoking measures implemented in other parts of Japan, notably Tokyo ahead of the 2020 Olympics, which remain in effect. The city's commitment to promoting a healthier environment aligns with its preparations for Expo 2025, a major event expected to attract global attention. With an investment of 164.7 billion yen ($1.16 billion) in the event, including significant urban infrastructure projects, Osaka is poised to showcase itself as a modern and welcoming host city.
