The Star Wars prequel trilogy had a fantastic cast of actors with widely ranging fame and talent. The trilogy received criticism for its shortcomings but fans have come to appreciate its cast, especially for its age-defying charm.
One of Disney+'s best science fiction sagas is a trilogy of movies that has an unbelievably great cast and keeps getting better as the years go by.
Disney+ is one of the best streaming services for science fiction shows and movies. It has an incredibly deep catalog of both classic movies, like the Star Wars films, and newer shows, like the Marvel Cinematic Universe's series. Among all of these great offerings, however, hides one trilogy of movies that has the best cast of anything on Disney+, and some of the best staying power of all time. That trilogy is the Star Wars prequel trilogy.
While there are certainly other great sci-fi movies on Disney+, from Predator: Badlands to Wall-E, the prequel trilogy has the single best cast on the entire streaming service. That may seem like a bold claim, especially considering the reception The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith initially got, but it's absolutely true. What's more, the prequels are actively getting better with every passing year.
The Star Wars Prequel Trilogy Had A Fantastic Cast That Wasn't Always Well-Directed It can be very easy to forget just how incredible the cast of the Star Wars prequel trilogy actually was. The trilogy was widely ridiculed for its stiff performances and clunky dialogue, with particular ridicule going against both Anakin Skywalker actors, Jake Lloyd and Hayden Christensen, after all.
While those are valid criticisms of the trilogy, they're really more a symptom of George Lucas' struggle with writing dialogue and his odd style of direction. The actors played their parts the way Lucas wanted them to, and fans just didn't like the way Lucas wanted his dialogue performed. If you look past the dialogue and the stilted emotions of its characters, however, the Star Wars prequel trilogy was chock-full of amazing actors.
There were classically trained actors like Ian McDiarmid, Christopher Lee, and Terrence Stamp. There were major movie stars like Liam Neeson, Samuel L. Jackson, and Natalie Portman. There were even relatively unknown rising stars like Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen. Even legendary puppeteer and voice actor Frank Oz came back to voice Yoda again.
The cast of each prequel movie reads like a who's who of Hollywood greats. There are only a handful of movies that have so many stars attached to them in general, let alone across three distinct films. Most movies would be lucky to put Christopher Lee and Ewan McGregor together for a few moments, but Star Wars had them in two successive movies.
It was an astonishingly well-cast trilogy, and the quality of its actors has made the prequels age with incredible grace. The cast of the prequel trilogy was so good, in fact, that they managed to overcome George Lucas' direction and writing at times and deliver some world-class performances.
Anakin's sand dialogue in Attack of the Clones was objectively poorly written, but Christensen still managed to deliver one of the most heart-wrenching displays of grief at Shmi Skywalker's death just a few minutes later in the same film. Every other actor has their own version of this contradiction, and every single one of them managed to knock at least one scene out of the park.
Despite A Rocky Start, The Star Wars Prequels Are Much More Beloved Now The cast of the Star Wars prequel trilogy is also likely a big reason why the trilogy has aged so well. As previously mentioned, when they were first coming out, the prequels were heavily criticized. Critics took exception to the trilogy's overreliance on CGI, the clunky dialogue, the meandering plots of both The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones, and much more.
Star Wars fans, as well, believed George Lucas had ruined the franchise so much that a vocal minority made a documentary expressing their frustration. Now, however, nearly 30 years after the premiere of The Phantom Menace, the prequels have gone through a renaissance for a number of reasons. The kids who watched the prequels in theaters — the target audience the trilogy was aimed at — grew up and became the dominant voice on the movies.
Memes and internet culture created a new wave of appreciation. Backlash at the sequel trilogy caused some fans to view the prequels with rose-colored glasses. Related I Watched The Star Wars Movies In Both Chronological And Release Order, & Here's Which One Is Better Watching all the Star Wars movies is incredibly fun, but is it better to view them by release date or their in-universe chronological placement?
Posts 17 By Nathaniel Roark Most importantly, fans learned to look past the prequels' obvious flaws and see the sweeping, epic saga that formed the trilogy's overarching story. Many of the original criticisms of the prequels are still valid. There is bad dialogue, convoluted plots, and poorly-aged CGI in every film.
But, with the blessing of hindsight, viewers were able to realize that George Lucas had created a deeply human and wildly original tale about the fall of the Jedi, the death of liberty, the rise of fascism, and Anakin's fall from grace.
