This article delves into the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) within physical operations industries, exploring the key factors driving this trend and highlighting the profound impact AI is having on worker safety and operational efficiency.
The world of physical operations forms the foundation of our global economy, contributing to over 40% of the world’s gross domestic product (GDP). Manufacturing, construction, energy utilities, transportation, and essential public services—these industries build our cities, power our homes, and deliver the goods we rely on daily. In my interactions with customers in these sectors, a significant shift in their operational approach over the past few years has become apparent.
Traditionally, these blue-collar industries were slower to adopt technological advancements like smartphones, cloud computing, and big data. However, they are now at the forefront of implementing AI. This surge in AI adoption stems from a confluence of technological and demographic factors that have laid the groundwork for its significant impact. Firstly, changing demographics are playing a pivotal role. While many workers still choose operations industries because they prefer hands-on work, a new generation of frontline workers has grown up with smartphones as an integral part of their personal lives. They expect their workplace technology to similarly streamline their jobs, enhance safety, and boost efficiency. Secondly, over the past decade, operations have undergone substantial digitalization. Although lagging behind industries like finance, retail, and healthcare, it has now brought its data and processes into the cloud—precisely when AI is ready to leverage this digitized environment. Most importantly, the inherent nature of operations presents immense potential for AI's impact. These industries remain the most hazardous, and AI demonstrably saves lives (and insurance premiums). Furthermore, operations are inherently cost-intensive, with capital expenses, fuel and energy costs, intensive labor demands, and fierce competition constantly squeezing margins. Even modest efficiency gains translate to a substantial impact on the bottom line. The most compelling AI-driven transformations I witness fall into two categories: enhancing worker safety and boosting operational efficiency. On the safety front, AI is proving to be a powerful ally in protecting workers. While self-driving taxis are making headlines, similar technology powers AI dash cams in millions of commercial vehicles, acting as copilots to drivers and promoting road safety by reducing accident rates by up to 50% across thousands of organizations. For instance, the City of New Orleans deployed AI dash cams in its ambulance fleet, resulting in a 37% reduction in speeding and a 46% decrease in mobile phone usage among drivers responding to nearly 70,000 emergency calls annually. Advanced AI can even recognize defensive driving maneuvers, with AI-captured footage aiding in exonerating drivers in disputed incidents. This success has driven drivers to enthusiastically adopt and advocate for the technology. Building upon the positive outcomes of driver safety, organizations are now deploying AI to safeguard workers in diverse environments. AI can now detect hazards from a smartphone photo and provide proactive training or customized safety checklists.
