The Mat-Su Borough issued a status report on the independent investigation of the Caswell Lakes animal cruelty case Wednesday.

The borough reports 23 dogs were confirmed to have died, rather than 25 as initially reported. The kennel license issued in January 2025 listed 28 dogs, and of those, two are in Borough custody, two died before the incident, and one previously ran away.

, one of the two dogs in their custody, is expected to transfer to a rescue partner next week. The other dog, Birdie, is expected to be moved to foster care. Concerns for the dogs’ well-being were voiced by nearby residents going as far back as January, according to people interviewed by Alaska’s News Source.

The people who called authorities asking to check on the animals said they were told not to get involved with the situation as animal control and troopers continued their investigation, which led to complaints from the community that investigators were not doing enough to help the dogs. The investigation into the borough’s enforcement actions began this week and is expected to continue into May, the borough states.
