Barely 2% of U.S. venture capital funding went to women-led businesses last year. San Antonio entrepreneurs are part of a movement seeking to change that.
Two years ago, Dawn Lafreeda got a cold call that would add a new dimension to her life’s work. Lafreeda, a former restaurant hostess, founded a San Antonio company, Den-Tex Central Inc. , and built it into the second-largest Denny ’s franchisee in the country, breaking gender molds and barriers over 40 years. The cold call was from the Los Angeles -based host of a podcast Lafreeda had never heard of.
Holt siblings lead family business into solar, venture capital She wanted Lafreeda to participate in what would become “Show Her the Money,” a documentary on women and venture capital that is being screened Friday evening at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts. The event, hosted by Dress for Success San Antonio, is part of a 100-city tour of screenings accompanied by live panels with the movie’s producers and people featured in it.
