A tie in a local election for the Village of Hortonville in Wisconsin was decided Tuesday by a game of chance: heads or tails .Watch video of the deciding coin toss in the player above.The race for village trustee had four candidates — Julie Arendt Vanden Heuvel , Therese Abitz , Shauna Keel and Dalton Davis — vying for three open seats .
Heuvel received 422 votes, Abitz received 405 votes, and Keel and Davis tied with 356 votes each.Per the State Statue 5.01, if two or more candidates receive the same amount of votes, the winner must be chosen by lot, meaning a random, unbiased method.The Village Board of Canvassers flipped a coin to settle the tie between Keel and Davis. Keel was given heads and Davis was given tails. The result was tails, electing Davis to the third position for village trustee. According to local news outlet WGBA, Davis said he voted for his competitor, Keel. 'Yeah, I even voted for her, just cause I know she did good last term,' Davis said.'It was a little disappointing to see that she didn’t get in, but it came to a coin toss, so I don’t know what else to tell you,' Davis said.
