Fine Wine Market: A Potential Buying Opportunity?

After a period of decline, the fine wine market shows signs of recovery. Squelch founder David Jackson provides insights and recommendations for investors and collectors, highlighting key vintages from Bordeaux and Italy.

The fine wine market, after experiencing a surge in demand during the pandemic lockdowns, has undergone a significant correction over the past three years. This downturn was fueled by factors such as China's slow post-pandemic recovery, challenging en primeur campaigns, and uncertainty surrounding US tariffs.

However, recent signs indicate a potential market rebound, spurred by a new EU trade deal with India, a rapidly growing consumer of fine wine. This development mirrors a similar surge in Chinese demand in 2008, which led to substantial price increases.

Consequently, the current dip in prices presents a potentially opportune moment for both investors and wine enthusiasts to acquire valuable vintages. David Jackson, founder of the fine wine marketplace Squelch, highlights several promising investment opportunities. He recommends Chateau Pape Clement 2020, currently available at £40 per bottle, noting its exceptional value compared to its previous market price and potential for significant appreciation. Pontet Canet 2018, priced at £65, is another suggestion, showcasing the winery's transformation and consistent quality.

For those interested in dessert wines, Chateau d’Yquem 1996 (in half bottles at £120) is presented as a rare opportunity to acquire a world-class vintage at an accessible price. Jackson also points to Lafite Rothschild 2006, currently at £370, as an undervalued First Growth with strong potential for growth, despite its age. Beyond Bordeaux, the article explores the potential of Italian Super Tuscans.

Tenuta Sette Ponti 'Oreno' 2020, at £40, is positioned as a high-quality alternative to more expensive Super Tuscans like Sassicaia and Tignanello. Tignanello 2023, priced at £90, is also recommended, with Jackson suggesting it has room for further price appreciation. The overall message is that careful selection and timing can yield substantial returns in the fine wine market, particularly as global demand continues to rise.

Jackson emphasizes the importance of patience, especially for wines that require extended aging, and a practical note: if you invest in wine, resist the temptation to drink it
