Officials with the Alaska Division of Forestry and Fire Prevention said this spring's wet weather may delay the wildfire season.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Many Southcentral residents aren’t thrilled with all the rain they’ve received this spring but there is a bright spot to the wet, cool weather.

Officials with the Alaska Division of Forestry and Fire Prevention said it may delay the wildfire season. Public Information Officer Sam Heller said fire season in the state usually begins April 1 and runs through August. The time between when the snow melts and things have yet to green-up is considered quite dangerous. But even though damp conditions may delay the start of the season, Heller said things can change very quickly.

“It doesn’t take long for that dead grass, once it’s clear of snow, that dead grass and other tree litter to dry out,” Heller said. “A little bit of sunshine, a little bit of breeze and it dries pretty quick. ”“We call them one-hour fuels because consistent sunlight and wind they can dry out in one hour and be receptive for burning,” Wildfire Division Chief Jon Glover said.

“So that’s really a concern for us. As things change throughout the spring and we get some fair weather, things can change pretty significantly and drastically. ” Glover asked Anchorage residents to be extra careful with campfires or other types of permitted burns. He said there have already been a few small fires in the municipality, mostly human caused.

“If you see something, say something,” he said. “Call early if you see smoke in the area, just let us know and we will send units out to take care of things. ” The Anchorage Fire Department is hosting an Interagency Wildfire Open House on Saturday, May 9 at Hilltop Ski Area from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will feature hands-on activities and information on preventing wildfires as well as equipment demonstrations.

Alaska’s Conversion Therapy Ban Remains in Place Amid Legal Uncertainty After Supreme Court RulingAlaska’s Conversion Therapy Ban Remains in Place Amid Legal Uncertainty After Supreme Court RulingAlaska’s only ordinance banning conversion therapy for minors remains intact despite a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling that could challenge similar laws nationwide. The Anchorage ordinance, passed in 2020, prohibits licensed practitioners from providing conversion therapy to minors, though it does not apply to clergy or unlicensed religious counselors. The Supreme Court’s decision did not endorse conversion therapy but ruled that Colorado’s ban likely violates the First Amendment, raising legal concerns for Anchorage’s ordinance. Supporters argue it protects minors from harm, while opponents claim it infringes on parental and religious rights. The legal uncertainty created by the ruling has left the ordinance in a precarious position, though no immediate legal challenges have been filed.
