A recent study, conducted by Which?, revealed that watering plants daily can lead to smaller and less healthy plants compared to watering them less frequently. The experiment focused on tomatoes, pelargoniums, and petunias, comparing three different watering methods and watering from the bottom with a bowl of water versus watering from above with a watering can.
Gardening experts warn that if you water your plants every day, you could be destroying them. In fact, in a side-by-side test, Which? discovered that plants which had a daily shower from the watering can were smaller and less healthy than those watered less frequently.
Peat-free composts tend to dry out faster than less eco-friendly peated soils, which can lead to overwatering and washing away the fertiliser in the compost, negatively impacting plant growth. Gardening experts suggest that if your plants feel dry, then they need water, but they also recommend checking the pot's weight and touching the soil to determine if it's dry or moist.
Watering your plants by feeling the soil or judging their weight can help reduce the number of waterings needed and provide better plant health
