Students' names float in space with Artemis II mission

Three Alabama high school graduates have their names floating in space as part of the Artemis II mission, thanks to a NASA project they completed three years ago.

Three Alabama high school graduates have a special connection to the Artemis II mission — their names are floating in space right now because of a project they did for NASA three years ago. The students signed lockers at the Space Center in Houston back in 2023.

At the time, they didn't think much of the symbolic moment until yesterday's Artemis II launch. Now, they're happy to be a part of this space mission, even if it's just their names. While history was being made, Jacob Lee, Ben Capps and Weston Ellison were all accounted for because of their names. They created a solar panel cleaner for their senior design project through the High Schools United with NASA to Create Hardware program. Weston Ellison said they wanted it to be something unique.' used something other than a brush so that it wouldn't scratch or mess up the solar panel. We found out a lot of the material that was on Mars or in space was going to be magnetic,' Ellison said.As a lasting result, they signed their names to this locker that's currently floating in space. Ben Capps reflected on the experience.'Me and Jay were joking about this the other day. We thought it was going to be on some satellite on some unmanned mission they send out there,' Capps said. While Ben is grateful for the opportunity that happened three years ago, the present is reality.'You have this feeling of, wow, my name is floating in space, that's so cool. Then turn around, I have to study for this exam I have in 15 minutes,' Capps said.He relishes the fact that it's something he can tell his grandchildren one day.'Just be joking around, saying, 'I was an astronaut, you know me,'' Capps said.Jacob Lee knows it was all worth it.'It's definitely a rewarding feeling that we put a lot of hard work into that project,' Lee said.Ben and Jacob are juniors at Auburn University, both majoring in mechanical engineering. Weston is a business major at the University of Alabama.
