The woman died on February 26 following attempts to save her life.
21-year-old Danious Da’Kel Sewell has been charged with manslaughter by way of fentanyl in connection with the death of 25-year-old Jakinah Chamique Freeman.
According to Dothan Police Chief William E. Benny, officers responded on February 26 to Westgate Village Apartments after a caller reported a woman unresponsive and CPR being performed to save her. Once on scene, officers assisted the Dothan Fire Department in providing emergency medical aid to the woman, identified as Freeman, before transporting her to a local hospital for additional treatment.
Back on the scene, officers spoke with the person who called in the incident to police and learned of a black male seen running from the scene before first responders arrived. Further witness statements and surveillance video from the area led investigators to identify this man as Sewell, who investigators linked to being the one who provided the fentanyl to Freeman that resulted in her death.
