A personal account of achieving and maintaining weight loss after coming off weight loss injections, detailing the challenges, successes, and lifestyle changes experienced.
This month marks a significant personal milestone – one year of maintaining a healthy weight after discontinuing weight loss injections, an occasion I’ve playfully dubbed my ‘thin-aversary’.
This achievement feels particularly meaningful after decades of struggling with weight fluctuations. For over twenty years, I’ve experienced the frustrating cycle of losing weight only to regain it, often with additional pounds.
However, the introduction of Mounjaro dramatically altered this pattern. Before starting the medication in November 2024, I was a size 18, weighing 13 and a half stone, and classified as obese based on my BMI. Simple tasks like putting on shoes required maneuvering around my stomach, and I felt self-conscious about my appearance, constantly worrying about others’ perceptions. I had previously attempted numerous diets – Weight Watchers, Slimming World, Atkins, cabbage soup, and high-fiber options – all without lasting success.
A prior experience with another GLP-1 drug, Saxenda, was cut short due to unpleasant side effects. Mounjaro, however, proved different. Within 48 hours of starting the lowest dose (2.5mg), my appetite significantly diminished, and I experienced no adverse effects. Over six months, increasing to a 7.5mg dose and then tapering off, I lost three stone 12lb, dropping to a size 12 – a size I had long considered an aspirational goal.
I deliberately chose to discontinue the maintaining dose, wanting to prove my ability to sustain the weight loss independently. Remarkably, the weight not only remained off but continued to decrease. The summer of 2025 was transformative. Instead of an extravagant vacation, I invested £3,000 in a new wardrobe, embracing clothes I hadn’t worn in years – denim shorts, sleeveless tops, and fitted dresses.
The constant ‘food noise’ that had plagued me for years vanished, along with cravings for alcohol and sugary foods. While Christmas 2024 was subdued due to the medication’s appetite-suppressing effects, I indulged during Christmas 2025, gaining a small amount of weight which I quickly shed by returning to sensible eating. Currently, I weigh around nine stone and wear a size 8.
I can comfortably fit into 26in waist jeans, have a noticeable thigh gap, and my facial features and body shape have significantly changed. My previous size 12 wardrobe is now too large, though a complete replacement with size 8 clothing is a future expense. This journey has been about more than just weight loss; it’s about reclaiming confidence and enjoying life without the constant burden of self-consciousness and unhealthy habits
