Police Blotter: Gun Threat, Shoplifting at Dick's Sporting Goods and Home Depot

A roundup of recent police activity in the area, including a reported gun threat in a parking lot, a shoplifting incident at Dick's Sporting Goods, and an arrest for attempted theft at Home Depot.

Updated: Feb. 08, 2025, 6:49 p.m.ByOfficers responded to a Lorain Road apartment building parking lot at 11:20 a.m. on Jan. 20 in response to a report of a traffic altercation involving a possible firearm.

A man told officers that his girlfriend was involved in a traffic altercation on Hilliard Boulevard near Columbia Road, and an SUV with dark-tinted windows followed her to a Lorain Road apartment complex. The woman called her boyfriend on a cell phone and told him that she was being followed. When she and the SUV entered the apartment building parking lot, the boyfriend approached the SUV and a man inside pointed a black handgun, possibly a Glock, at the boyfriend. The boyfriend stated, “he has a gun,” at which time the SUV driver sped off, according to a police report.A male shoplifting suspect carrying a duffle bag attracted the attention of Dick’s Sporting Goods employees on Jan. 22 when he entered a women’s dressing room and spend “an extended period of time” inside. The employees suspected he had concealed merchandise, according to a police report. An officer stopped the suspect after employees pointed him out and discovered he had two pairs of wire cutters in an outer jacket pocket. The suspect is accused of dumping multiple sensors and dye packs in a display area before exiting the store, according to the police report. Inside his duffle bag, officers recovered multiple items of Dick’s merchandise. All the clothing had holes from the sensors being removed and blue dye from the sensors also stained the clothing. The total loss due to the damaged clothing was nearly $250, according to the police report.Theft: Great Northern Shopping Center Police officers arrested a man suspected of trying to steal three masonry drill bits from the Home Depot at 3:27 p.m. on Jan. 24. A store asset protection officer said the man had concealed the items under his clothing and walked out of the store without attempting to pay for them. The drill bits were valued at nearly $375, according to a police report.
