If you're looking for a large SSD as an upgrade for your PC, laptop or Playstation 5 then WD's first budget-conscious Blue series model - the SN5000, which offers up to 4TB of storage should definitely be on your short list. The SSD market hasn't moved much in terms of price per gigabyte with 4TB being a luxury that few can afford and 2TB being the sweet spot if you have a hefty game library.
Even on WD's own website, though, the WD Blue SN5000 retails for $277 and about the same as that in pounds across the pond in the UK. That means it costs a fair amount more than the cheapest 4TB SSDs out there. However, those drives are considerably slower being PCIe 3 and tended to suffer from extremely slow performance once full or while writing outside of their cache, which is used to speed up write speeds on slower flash memory-equipped SSDs.
The WD Blue SN5000 has nCache 4.0 technology, converting spare space on the drive into a cache to boost write performance. The end result is an SSD that will boast far superior performance to a PCIe 3 SSD, especially when it comes to dealing with large file transfers. Despite our review sample sporting a massive 4TB capacity, WD houses everything on a single side thanks to dense QLC flash memory.
That said, the SSD is only able to hit 5,500MB/sec, so if maxing out your M.2 ports PCIe 4 bus is important, this is maybe not the SSD for you. Also worthy of consideration is the endurance. At 1,200 terabytes written , this is half what you'd see from a high-end SSD with the same capacity, but as a general purpose storage drive, 1200TBW is over 1TB written every day for three years, which most of us won't get close to.
Benchmark performance was as expected with a noticeable drop compared to the PCIe 4 Crucial T500, but then it costs more for identical capacities such as 2TB, with 4TB not being available with the T500. The biggest fall was in the random 4K Q32T16 test where it barely managed half the speed of the Crucial T500, with some wide gaps in the 3DMark game load tests too.
