WAYNE COUNTY , Ohio - The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office shared on social media Monday that its office has received several reports of scam calls.
According to the post, the scammers are calling people stating they are Lieutenant Richard Cummings and Officer Reed from the sheriff’s office and could bond out an inmate. The amounts of bond have varied from $1,000 to $3,500, and it appears that whomever is doing the scamming is specifically targeting anyone that has been arrested for domestic violence.
The sheriff’s office said the callers are contacting family members somehow, and informing them that they can bond out their loved ones by taking electronic forms of payment. The scammers are telling people to send bond money through Venmo and Cash app, and the sheriff’s office said they are calling from the following phone numbers:The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office said it does not have a Lieutenant Richard Cummings or an Officer Reed, and would never contact a family member regarding bonding out an inmate.
The sheriff’s office also said that it will never ask for any kind of electronic forms of payment to bond anyone out. Those who have received a call or text and feel it is a scam, should contact the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.
