The beginning of October is bringing street fairs, block parties and live entertainment to The City
Local residents are getting ready to say goodbye to September and flip their calendars to a new month. Block parties, food festivals, game nights and a self-guided art crawl are among the 18 events you should check out during the start of October.
Calligraphy and Cocktails at Mr. Mahjong’s The Kearny Street bar hosts instructor Jojo Liu, who will teach guests the art of Chinese calligraphy through lessons on brush techniques and writing simple characters. Liu also explains cultural stories behind the characters. Guests, who can take home a miniature scroll and silk box, can RSVP their attendance on Eventbrite. Lessons start at 6 p.m. and all materials will be provided. Port Wine Fest The Port Wine Shippers Association is hosting 44 Portuguese producers, who will showcase their whites, reds, and sparkling and Portuguese wines from regions throughout the world. Tickets range from $55 to $76 and can be purchased on Eventbrite. The festival runs from 5 to 8 p.m. and will be held at The Cube, which is located at 345 Montgomery St. ‘Noises Off’ opening night at San Francisco Playhouse The nonprofit Union Square theater company’s latest production spotlights a British troupe struggling to stage a farce, a comedy that puts exaggerated characters in unlikely situations. Tickets, which range in price from $52 to $145, can be purchased online. The play is 2 hours and 35 minutes, with one 10-minute intermission. The theater is located at 450 Post St. Shows run through Nov. 8 Free film screening at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Organizers will screen “Sa Amin: Our Place,” a 2022 documentary centered on Filipinos in the South of Market neighborhood. The film combines archival footage with interviews from local community leaders. The screening starts at 6 p.m. Guests can RSVP their attendance online. The Yerba Buena Center for the Arts is located at 701 Mission St. Mexican Bingo in the Mission Tacolicious hosts a game night every first and third Thursday of the month featuring “loteria.” Participants can play for gift cards to neighborhood businesses, gift certificates to the restaurant and artwork. Guests can play for free with the purchase of food or drink. Guests can RSVP their attendance on Eventbrite, with the game night running from 6 to 8 p.m. Tacolicious is located at 741 Valencia St. ‘Terror Vault’ Halloween Haunt 2025 Peaches Christ is turning the 15,000-square-foot San Francisco Mint into a theatrical experience with more than 100 scare actors. This year’s theme involves three witches, who are spread across the globe and dedicated to forming a powerful coven that threatens humanity.North Beach First Fridays art crawl Neighborhood bars and restaurants partner with galleries and museums for the self-guided art crawl, which reflects North Beach's growing art and entertainment scenes. This month's edition, which runs from 5 to 9 p.m., honors Italian Heritage Month. Details and participating locations can be found online. ‘Wild Night Out’ at California Academy of Sciences The Wildlife Conservation Network is partnering with the Golden Gate Park museum to host conservationists from around the world, who will share their stories of working directly with animals. Attendees will also be able to visit the museum's exhibits. The event is free with RSVP and runs from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Cal Academy is located at 55 Music Concourse Dr. ‘Down on the Corner’ A cast of queer, transgender and female performers will pay tribute to the 1966 Compton’s Cafeteria riot with “Down on the Corner,” an aerial dance directed and choreographed by Jo Kreiter. The performance includes original songs by Melanie DeMore and a film by Leila Weefur. Audiences gather at the southeast corner of Turk and Taylor streets. Shows, which last 35 minutes, are held at 7:30 and 8:30 p.m. No reservations are required to attend the free production. As part of this year’s edition, organizers are partnering with local venues for after-festival performances. Two dollars per ticket will support the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund.San Francisco Clean-Up in the Sunset San Francisco Public Works is hosting a day of volunteering throughout District 4, with up to 10 work sites where participants can garden, pick up trash, plant trees or clean up graffiti. Attendees can register between 8:30 to 9 a.m. at the Sunset Elementary School parking lot. Each shift will last about three hours, with participants meeting back at the parking lot for a free lunch. Circus on the Square presented by St. Mark's Square Saint Mark's Lutheran Church will host performances by artists from Circus Bella, in addition to providing free cotton candy, popcorn and face-painting. Admission is free and donations can be made online. Saturday's event runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The church is located at 1111 O'Farrell Street. Richmond District Autumn Moon Festival The ninth annual edition of the festival brings performances, family-friendly games, food, local vendors and neighborhood nonprofits to Clement Street between 8th and 11th avenues.One Family block party presented by the Chinese Historical Society of America Waverly Place in Chinatown will host a day of musical performances, DJ sets, martial arts demonstrations and pop-up art exhibitions. The block party will also launch the CHSA's new"mobile museum," which teaches attendees lessons through hands-on art demonstrations. Saturday's event runs from 1 to 4 p.m. and will be held at Waverly Place between Clay and Washington streets. ‘SF Open Studios’ presented by ArtSpan The SoMa nonprofit arts center invites attendees to visit the eight members of the program's Journal Building Artist Residency. Guests can view and collect artwork made by those in the program.Middle Eastern Food Festival presented by St. Nicholas Church The 29th annual edition of this festival features dishes including kebabs, falafels, hummus, tabbouleh and shawarma, among other offerings. Attendees can also enjoy live music, entertainment and local booths featuring crafts, jewelry and souvenirs. Saturday's festival runs from noon to 9 p.m., and Sunday's edition lasts from 1 to 7 p.m. The church is located at 5200 Diamond Heights Blvd. Harvest Festival and Pumpkin Patch at Cityside Park San Francisco's newest waterfront park will host a day dedicated to autumnal fun, featuring pumpkins for sale, hay bale pyramids, bounce houses, a petting zoo and other family-friendly activities. Live music and sweet treats are also being provided. Sunday's festival runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cityside Park is located at 387 Ave. of the Palms. Guests can RSVP their attendance through Eventbrite. Castro Street Fair Held at the intersection of Castro and Market streets, the 51st edition of this community tradition brings dancing, live music and DJs to the neighborhood. Sunday's fair also features local artists, vendors, craftsmen and nonprofits. It runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. ‘SF Open Studios’ presented by ArtSpan The SoMa nonprofit arts center invites attendees to visit the eight members of the program's Journal Building Artist Residency.
