Here’s everything you need to know to make the most of summer 2026 in Dothan!
DOTHAN, Ala. - With budgets tighter than ever, parents across the Wiregrass are searching for ways to keep kids busy this summer without spending a fortune.
Good news: Dothan is delivering — with a packed calendar of free and low-cost activities for families of all ages. From summer reading programs and water parks to fishing, flag football, and movies under the stars, here’s everything you need to know to make the most of summer 2026 in Dothan! The Houston County Library System is kicking off its annual Summer Reading Program on May 26th — and it won’t cost families a dime.
This year’s theme is “Unearth a Story,” complete with dinosaur and fossil displays at the library to get kids excited about reading and discovery. Chris Warren, Director of the Dothan-Houston County Library System, said the program is built on real research — not just fun.
“The way that we design ours is it’s based on extensive research that shows that kids who read during the summer generally perform better in school when they return in the fall,” Warren said. And there’s entertainment built in, too. One returning crowd favorite: Professor Whispop, a magician who has become a summer staple at the library.
“He always does a really good job every year. And we’re really excited about having him come back,” Warren said. The summer reading program is free and open to kids of all ages. Head to your nearest Houston County Library branch to sign up starting May 26th.
When the Alabama heat hits, Water World is ready. Dothan Leisure Services’ popular water park is opening its gates at the end of May — and by then, it will be open every day. Kelly Stakelum, Assistant Director for Dothan Leisure Services for Aquatics, said Water World has something for everyone.
“We have the wave pool here. We have cabanas. You can bring in a picnic here. We have a really good atmosphere for families, places for groups, for birthdays, you name it,” Stakelum said.
Ticket prices vary, but season passes are available for families who plan to make Water World a summer staple. And based on early demand, this is shaping up to be a big season.
“Tons of feedback. Lots of phone calls, lots of online questions. And like I said, very strong season pass sales today. People are ready for summer,” Stakelum said.
Swim lessons and additional community pools around Dothan are also available for families looking for more water options throughout the season. Dothan Leisure Services is going all-in on summer programming this year — and officials say it’s on track to be one of their busiest summers yet. Theresa Reynolds, Marketing Coordinator for Dothan Leisure Services, said the camps are a win for both kids and parents.
“Summer camps are our most popular programs. It’s the perfect way for kids to come have fun during the summer and parents have childcare that’s safe, fun — and they go on field trips all the time,” Reynolds said. Reynolds said keeping activities affordable for families is the driving mission behind the summer lineup.
“I personally am very appreciative of that because I do have a five-year-old — and it gives us opportunities to get outside and go do fun things without having to spend hundreds of dollars every weekend,” she said. It’s not just little kids who are excited. Aly Baker, a recent graduate, said getting out into the community beats staying home.
