New study of Petra’s amazing water system uncovers 380-foot-long lead pipe

A new study seeks to capture the first real blueprints of Petra’s advanced water management system.

A recent survey of the ‘Ain Barq aqueduct in the mega-famous ancient city of Petra shows its water management system was even more complex than originally understood. In a recent study published in Levant, archaeologists reported the discovery of nine pipes, including a very rare 380-foot-long lead pipe in Petra ’s ancient aqueduct.

Their findings presented a new picture of how the city developed, thanks to their advanced engineering and their water supply, evoking the old adage that water is the source of life, as the city — in arid surroundings — managed to produce a “fertile city.” ‘Ain Braq aqueduct carried water through two main channels, not one, as previous studies suggested, including a rare lead pipe, honoring its Hellenistic roots, according to The Greek Reporter. Famous for its rock-cut architecture, Petra is one of the world’s most famous archaeological sites, blending ancient Eastern and Hellenistic traditions. Previous studies presented “overly optimistic reconstructions” of the city’s water system, lacking scientific evidence. The ongoing excavation project aimed to shift the picture of Petra’s world-famous water system from a drawing to a clear photograph with concrete excavations and examinations. Seriously cool pipes in PetraThe first season of the Urban Development of Ancient Petra Project in September 2023 kicked off to an exciting start.Boasting baths, gardens, sanctuaries, and pools, the city of Petra became known for its water conduit systems, as it needed technologically advanced piping to supply the city with the source of its abundant life. Within the 2,500 square-meter section of Jabal al-Madhbah massif, a sandstone peak, researchers discovered nine conduits, and a new lead pipe about 380.577 feet long alongside a terracotta channel. Notably, they identified one large reservoir sealed by a high dam, two cisterns and seven basins of different sizes that connect runoff channels that had been cut into the rock, according to Archaeology Mag.Overall, the efforts to really grasp Petra’s impressive water management system proved the city’s technical prowess and skill to supersede what archaeologists could “guestimate.” One structure, a retention dam, showed an innovation in design, as an irregular shape with a stepped face, reducing stress from stored water. The lead pipe carried pressurized water, and archaeologists understood that this material was more favorable in navigating steep terrain, where water rises and falls as the terrain presented engineering challenges that these ancient minds turned into a real achievement. The second phase of this system then relied on terracotta pipes and open channels to a distribution box with two outlets that would then distribute the water throughout the city, or to sections of it, as per Archaeology Mag.The Greek Reporter states that the ancient aqueduct might have shifted back to terracotta piping because the material imposed less demands in maintaining them. Archaeology Mag continues that the lead system, in particular, enabled an initial phase of the city’s growth, feeding water into the Great Temple and the Garden and Pool Complex.A new, exciting blueprint of Petra’s super advanced water system is comingArchaeologists plan to map the full course of the ‘Ain Barq aqueduct and beyond, to develop a crisp, clear picture of how engineers planned this massive undertaking, particularly with the challenges the terrain presented, which required further and impressive problem solving in one of the world’s most intriguing cities. We await to hear more from Petra. Read the study in Levant.
