According to the Mat-Su Borough, the increase in temperatures and changing conditions are resulting in weaker and unstable ice conditions.

WASILLA , Alaska - The Matanuska-Susitna Borough says that ice on bodies of water throughout the Valley is becoming weaker and is warning residents not to venture out.

According to the borough, the rise in temperatures and changing conditions are resulting in weaker and unstable ice conditions.

“Ice conditions are really poor,” said Brian Davis, deputy director of Fire and Rescue for the Mat-Su Borough. According to the borough, bodies of water are experiencing what is called “decaying” ice right now. That weak ice, according to the borough, can put people and pets who are recreating on the water at risk of breaking through the ice.

“You’ve got the sun beating down on it from the top. You’ve got water eroding it from the bottom. You’ve got a lot of weight on it from the melting runoff and stuff. And you can have ice that’s as much as two feet thick and can’t hold a person at this time of the year,” Davis said.

The water is just below freezing, Davis warned, meaning people who get wet are at risk of hypothermia. Davis is advising the public and their pets to avoid the water right now. People who spot an emergency situation should call 911 and not attempt a rescue on the ice themselves.

“Basically, if you go out on your own, you’re likely to become a second victim,” Davis said. “So we want you to keep an eye on where the victim is so you can help direct us to them when we get there. ”Missing 19-year-old Kelly Hunt found dead in Anchorage, family saysIdentity of ‘Golden Orb’ found in waters off Alaskan coast revealedMan shuts off power for entire village of Gambell during blizzard, AST saysSpring mixed showers continue for Alaska
