Sweat, pollen, plants and bugs are causing warm-weather rashes to flare, and doctors say one common mistake can make them worse.

DOTHAN, Ala. - As temperatures rise, so do skin irritations. Sweat, pollen, plants and bugs are causing warm-weather rashes to flare, and doctors say one common mistake can make them worse: getting into bodies of water with broken or inflamed skin.

“There are certain viruses that do go around the community in the spring that tend to give you some rashes, like adenovirus, enterovirus, some hand, foot and mouth,” said Dr. Michael J. Ramsey of Dothan Pediatric Healthcare. “Those are common viruses we see in very young children. For older children, we see contact dermatitis because they are outside playing.

” Doctors say when skin is already inflamed — especially if it has been scratched — water can introduce bacteria and other germs. Even clean-looking water can carry microbes, and rashes can sting more and flare up.

“With the heat and kids tending to scratch, we do tend to see some impetigo and some skin infections in the summer as well,” Ramsey said. Swimming with a rash depends on the severity of the rash. Staying away from bodies of water, like lakes and swimming pools, is important — especially if the rash is contagious.

Doctors also recommend showering after yard work or hiking, washing clothes right away, and using insect repellent to cut down on bites that can trigger rashes.
