Coco Monotya's reputation as a guitar gunslinger took root during his decade with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, which started during 1984 and, he says, made an indelible impact on everything from his playing to his bandleading.

is a bit surprised to still be on the road -- in this cases driving between concerts in the Midwest -- at 73.“The perspective is different,” Montoya says via phone during the ride. “The maturity is different, just the way I’m playing now, as an older player. I think it’s every kind of degree you can think of, playing different -- especially on songs that were done quite awhile ago.

“He really brought me back,” says Montoya, who spent a decade with Mayall -- some with Walter Trout also on guitar -- and recorded several albums with him. Nevertheless, he notes the specter of “the ghosts of guitarists past” generated " a lot of pressure. Every night was a test of your ego. It was a test of your abilities, ‘cause Walter would bring it every night, and he’s incredible.” Mayall was nevertheless “always supportive.

After leaving Mayall, Montoya briefly worked with the Cate Brothers and launched his solo career with “Gotta Mind to Travel” in 1995. Since then, he’s released nine more solo albums, including last year’s “Writing on the Wall,” which includes contributions by his friend and current touring partner Ronnie Baker Brooks.
