Rep. Jamie Allard of Eagle River stated she was requesting public records from the Division of Elections regarding vote counts not yet finalized or made public.

Rep. Jamie Allard of Eagle River stated she was requesting public records from the Division of Elections, saying in a press release on Thursday that her request was specifically to Division of Elections Director Carol Beecher. All communications regarding ballot transportation from all precincts to the Region IV office in Nome, Alaska; andAllard attributed her request to the timeliness — or lack thereof — of reported election results, saying after 48 hours the state was still “no closer to having solid, reputable vote totals shared with the public.”In an interview with Alaska‘s News Source Allard said she stands by her release’s statement that the DOE is “not fully up to the job,” and ended by demanding transparency and expediency of publicized election results. However, when asked what changes she would like to see made by election officials in order to hasten the finalization and release of election results, Allard didn’t have an answer. “I don’t know yet again, we got to circle back around to the records request,” Allard said. “I have to see what has happened that these delays have been going on again.” Beecher, when asked by Alaska‘s News Source to respond to the implications of Allard’s request, described the logistical dilemmas involved with vote counts in Alaska, especially rural regions. “The majority of the Region 4 precincts and several in Region 3 are hand count precincts. This means that they do not have a scanner,” Beecher said via email. “First choice votes are tallied at the end of election day by the poll workers and the results are called in to the Region 4 office, where they are documented and then sent to Juneau for reporting.” Following the time constraint involved with hand-counted ballots, Beecher cited the occasional connectivity issues or the potential for a precinct’s inability to call in results immediately. According to Beecher, all precincts from Regions 3 and 4 have called in their results, except for Atqasuk, Akiachak and Nulato. Beecher explained the three precincts mailed their ballots to Juneau the day after the election without calling in results. When presented with this response, Allard didn’t believe it warranted any less concern, calling the lack of results “unexcuseable.” “We won’t have those results until we receive the ballots in Juneau. Once ballots are received in Juneau from a precinct, they are scanned and the results are corrected if there were any discrepancies in the call-in information,” Beecher said.List of 7 Anchorage schools recommended for closure or repurposing released
