Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan and other Republicans will try to fend off far-right challenges while Democrats in Houston battle for legislative seats.
Voters in Houston and across Texas are heading to the polls today to decide a handful of key primary runoffs. Polling locations will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Runoff elections typically see low turnout, and less than 1% of 2.5 million registered voters in Harris County had cast early ballots through Thursday, according to the county’s unofficial totals. That means a relatively small number of votes could decide several races.
Texas Primary Runoff Voter Guide In Beaumont, Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan is fighting for his political career in a contentious race against oil and gas consultant David Covey. Covey’s supporters, including Attorney General Ken Paxton and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, have derided the speaker as a fake conservative who has handed too much power to Democrats.
Dade Phelan’s defenders push to save Texas House speaker from a seismic primary loss In Houston, State Rep. Jarvis Johnson and state Sen. Molly Cook are running to be the Democratic nominee for District 15’s state Senate seat. After winning a special election earlier this month, Cook will serve out the remainder of John Whitmire’s term. Whitmire left the seat vacant when he took over duties as Houston mayor in January.
