A tornado warning disrupted a wedding celebration, but it was what happened next that stole the show.
Most couples worry about rain on their wedding day, but in true Oklahoma fashion, one couple had to dodge tornadoes. But severe storm s weren't the only guests on the couple's big day. An entire volleyball team was also part of the celebrations after the couple rode out the storm at the Oklahoma City Convention Center, where the volleyball tournament was also taking place.
People say marriage is about weathering storms together. Clearly, Visha and Ankeet Shah had a head start. 'I remember them saying, 'We have an emergency! There's a tornado watch happening, and we need to take shelter and go downstairs,'' Ankeet, the groom, said. At the OKC Convention Center on Friday night, the Shahs were in the middle of one of their biggest wedding celebrations. “What's called Gerba, and it’s a traditional dance that we do. It was the event I was looking forward to most of the five,' Visha, the bride, said. But music suddenly stopped and was replaced by the sound of sirens. 'I thought it was a joke at first, but then it turned into a reality, and we headed downstairs,' Ankeet said. Their wedding planner, Sydney Ore, said they had a plan in place. 'We got almost 400 people evacuated out of that room, with the assistance of the venue, to the first floor probably within about 10 to 15 minutes,” Ore, with Weddings by Vara, said. But what they weren't expecting was to be sheltered in place during a volleyball tournament. 'I was warming up for my game, and the sirens went off,' Kinley Anderson, who is part of the OKC Heat 15 National Volleyball Team, said.Per protocol, the Convention Center told everyone to shelter in place. 'We started kind of chatting with one of the coaches, and before we knew it, the girls ran onto the court, taking pics with the couple and started chanting and lifting them up,' Ore said. 'The girls were basically singing with us, dancing with us. They made us feel like royalty,' Ankeet said. 'We joined into the party,' Anderson said. 'It was amazing. It was the kindness of strangers, truly. 'There's usually music playing around and folks singing around with it, as well, but we did a silence dance with it, as well, and we looked over and saw the volleyball girls across the net doing a silent dance with us, as well, and that was super fun and memorable,' Visha said. So, if anyone asks what kind of foundation the Shahs' marriage is built on, it has been tornado-tested. 'I couldn’t have imagined what happened. It was amazing,' Visha said. The couple said their actual wedding day was the following day, and everything was perfect.
