Vigo, a popular Spanish cruise port, is set to introduce a daily tourist tax ranging from €0.80 to €2 per person per night, depending on accommodation type. The tax aims to redistribute tourism revenue and reduce environmental impact.
A new tourist tax is poised to be implemented in Vigo , a prominent Spanish cruise destination. The city council is finalizing plans to introduce a daily levy for visitors, varying based on their chosen accommodation.
The proposed charges range from €0.80 (£0.69) per night for budget options like hostels and campsites to €2 (£1.74) per night for guests staying in luxury four and five-star hotels. Mid-range accommodations, encompassing tourist rentals and three to four-star hotels, will likely face a fee of €1.60 (£1.39) nightly, while guesthouses and one to two-star hotels are expected to charge around €1.20 (£1.04). Importantly, cruise passengers disembarking at the port will also be subject to a €1.20 (£1.04) charge.
The introduction of this tax is scheduled to occur gradually, beginning in October, coinciding with the city’s renowned festive light switch-on. Initially, the tax will apply only to the first two nights of a visitor’s stay, a policy in effect until July 1, 2027. After this date, the tax will extend to a maximum of five nights.
Vigo, situated in north-west Spain, serves as a crucial gateway to the stunning Cíes Islands, celebrated for their pristine white sand beaches and turquoise waters. Exemptions are being considered for children, individuals with disabilities, and those travelling for medical purposes. The primary objective of this initiative is to redistribute tourism revenue and alleviate environmental pressures stemming from the increasing influx of visitors.
This week alone, Vigo welcomed over 7,500 cruise passengers from three ships – the MS Britannia, the MS Ventura, and Le Bellot – highlighting the city’s popularity as a cruise destination. While final approval is still pending, Vigo appears set to join other Galician cities, such as Santiago de Compostela and A Coruña, which have already implemented similar tourist levies.
Vigo, home to approximately 295,000 residents, is well-known for its numerous beaches and its proximity to the Cíes Islands, particularly Rodas Beach, which was lauded as the 'best beach in the world' by The Guardian in 2007. The city is also famous for its elaborate Christmas light displays, attracting thousands of cruise passengers annually.
The implementation of this tax reflects a broader trend of increasing tourist levies globally, driven by concerns about overtourism, local housing pressures, and the need for sustainable tourism practices. Other destinations, like Amsterdam, Bali, and Barcelona, have recently introduced or increased their tourist taxes, demonstrating a growing commitment to managing the impact of tourism.
Amsterdam now charges 12.5 per cent on top of hotel costs, Bali levies IDR 150,000 (£6.80) per person, and Barcelona’s nightly fees can reach up to €15 (£13)
