University of Alabama students developed a free app for the nonprofit Victims of Crime and Leniency.
Local nonprofit Victims of Crime and Leniency unveiled the Alabama Victim Assistance Portal, which connects people in need of help with available services throughout the state.
Wanda Miller, executive director of VOCAL, said the organization had wanted to create an app for years, but it was out of its budget. That changed when a group of students at the University of Alabama called offering to help.
“On my bucket list for a long time has been an app. My husband says I have 100 apps on my phone and I use every single one of them,” Miller said. Miller said the call came last fall, and she described it as a blessing falling from the sky. The students wanted to dedicate their class project to helping VOCAL in the tech space.
“So I said I’d really like to have an app for victim services across Alabama. And there was no hesitation, and she said we can do that. And I was like you can? ” Miller said.
The app, called AVAP, bridges the gap for victims by helping them navigate the process a crime victim goes through.
“They bought into the whole process of what a crime victim would go through from the crime scene to decades later,” Miller said. Miller said the app will help everyone throughout the state, but especially people in rural communities.
“Who may not have a domestic violence shelter or who may not have a sexual assault clinic or any kind of services they can access by driving down the street. So now they can pick up their phone and say this is where I’m at. Tell me what’s available,” Miller said.
