City eyes fines up to $2,000 and six-month vehicle impounds following incident that drew 100 cars

CINCINNATI - City leaders are moving to implement tougher penalties for street takeovers before summer, following a massive March incident that resulted in nearly 50 arrests. The crackdown comes after a street takeover advertised on social media drew about 100 vehicles on March 14.

The takeover started at Paddock and Seymour and ended on Reading Road at Woodward High School. “We’re not going to tolerate this. We’re going to arrest you, we’re going to take your car,” said Cincinnati Interim Police Chief Adam Hennie.resulted in 45 total arrests, 16 other citations, 58 vehicles towed and more than $13,000 in tow fees. The majority of those arrested were not from Cincinnati, with CPD tracking many of the vehicles to Dayton and Columbus. CPD drone images showed the scale of the takeover, with crowds surrounding vehicles performing stunts. “You can see there’s so many people. Look at all of them around the light pole and that car is going around them. I mean how dangerous is that,” Hennie said.“It’s not just them people at risk, but just the money that now it’s going to cost to get rid of that blight just like graffiti that we don’t want to see,” Hennie said.at Tuesday’s Public Safety Committee meeting. They want a plan within 30 days modeled after Louisville, where fines could hit $1,000 for the first offense and $2,000 for repeat offenders. Cars can be impounded for up to six months. “We are penalizing people that think that they can come into Cincinnati and turn our streets into possible kill zones to be quite honest,” Cincinnati city council member Scotty Johnson said.“We just can’t tolerate that and allow this to happen even when these idiots are doing it themselves, we still have to be able to provide safety to them personally so they don’t end up getting hurt,” Hennie said.Council will vote Wednesday on whether to move the plan forward.Lake County corrections officer/SWAT team member passes awayLibrary director fired for refusing to relocate controversial books out of the children’s sectionNorth Ridgeville students’ murals selected for Ohio’s America 250 initiativeTrump warns a ‘whole civilization will die tonight’ if a deal with Iran isn’t reached
