A woman who was shot by an Alaska State Trooper last week has been arrested for allegedly pointing a gun at officers and threatening to kill a specific trooper, authorities said.
Troopers said two AST officers responded around 3:15 p.m. Wednesday to a residence in Houston to serve an arrest warrant for 46-year-old Houston resident Vanessa Wulf for terroristic threatening in the second degree, according to the Alaska Department of Public Safety.
The warrant stemmed from over seventeen 911 calls in which the woman allegedly made explicit threats to kill law enforcement officers. When they got there, the two state troopers saw the front door to be wide open. Announcements were made for Wulf to leave the house. Shortly after, Wulf was seen standing at the open front door.
According to her arrest report, Wulf reached down beside the door and grabbed a shotgun, which she pointed at troopers. AST identified the trooper on Monday as Nathan Marble, a one-year veteran of the Alaska State Troopers. According to the arrest report, Wulf called 911 and said she was shot. She then stopped answering the dispatcher’s questions.
Southcentral AST SWAT was activated and responded to the residence. When SWAT members entered the home, they found Wulf with a “through and through gunshot wound to the arm,” according to the arrest report. The other initial trooper at the scene, Colten Taratko, told investigators that he saw Wulf reaching back and grabbing a shotgun from near the door.
Taratko described it as a brown and black metal, large shotgun, and she held it up like she was about to rack the slide to chamber a round. He told the investigator that upon seeing the shotgun, Taratko put his PA system microphone down and moved to where the other trooper was. While Taratko was moving, he said he heard three gunshots and initially assumed they were from Wulf shooting at them. He did not see her getting shot.
By the time he got to where he could see the front of the house again, the front door was closed, and Wulf was out of sight. Wulf was detained and transported to Mat-Su Regional Hospital for further medical care, where another incident resulted in more charges being filed. According to troopers, Wulf injured a hospital staff member early Saturday morning while being cared for her wounds she sustained in the standoff on Wednesday.
Troopers say the staff member received a “minor” cut that “caused pain,” and that a single fourth-degree assault charged was forwarded to the Palmer district attorney’s office. Troopers found two guns in the residence: one 12-gauge pump-action shotgun located on a mattress in the bedroom, and a .22 caliber rifle in a separate bedroom.
Additionally, a bandolier holding multiple 12-gauge shotgun shells was found in a closet.
