PARMA , Ohio - The Parma City School District shared updates on how it will be continuing to strengthen safety across all of its schools following on incident that occurred on April 20.
Several updates were provided to the actions that the district has taken to address additional safety precautions in the buildings. The Safety and Security team have identified entry areas in the building with procedures in place to conduct evening checks. Previously it only one Safety and Security staff onsite. Parma Heights Police Department will return an officer at Valley Forge and has committed that presence for the rest of the year.
The school district provided the following law enforcement updates for buildings district wide:Seven Hills Police Department will increase their patrol officers presence to check-in and walk the buildings at various times throughout the day. Shiloh will have a PCSD Safety and Security staff onsite, Greenbriar will have a security resource officer from Parma Police Department.
Normandy will have PCSD Safety and Security staff and an SRO from Parma Police Department onsite The Parma Police Department is increasing patrols at all the schools in their district in addition to the SRO’S Parma Police Department has instituted a special patrol alert for their patrol officers to check-in with all schoolsParma City School District said it is using grant funding to make upgrades to building security, including the modernization of vestibules and the implementation of an enhanced visitor management system. These improvements will be able to strengthen the ability for the schools to monitor and manage access in its buildings.
The Safety and Security Director has been trained as a trainer in the Comprehensive School Threat Assessment Guidelines , and all building administrators wills participate in additional threat assessment training this summer. The ongoing professional learning ensures a consistent, research-based approach to identify and respond to potential concerns, reinforce the district’s commitments to maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment for all students, the district shared.
Parma City school District also said the superintendent has established a Task Force on school safety and will be hosting an inaugural meeting to address long term solutions for the district. A variety of topics will be discussed to be primarily focused on mental health supports, safety audits, clear bags and backpacks, and metal detectors and wands. The Task Force will also work to provide recommendations for the district to consider to enhance safety and security district wide.
